My Review of Baleno Livingstone Mens Drover Coat
When it comes to choosing the right outer layer for those blustery countryside days, I’ve learned to trust my instincts—and my coat.
You see, I’ve become so inseparable from my Baleno Livingstone Long Waterproof Coat that the Holland family dogs barely recognise me without it! Every morning, I walk through the fields with the pups, dodging the occasional curious sheep (they seem to think I’m a particularly well-dressed bale of hay), and I wouldn't be without this raincoat.
We love sharing our honest reviews and recommendations on our blog, and today, I'm looking forward to talking about the Livingstone in all its glory. If you've had your eye on this one for a while and want to know whether to take the plunge, it's time to settle in.
Overview of Baleno Livingstone Waterproof Long Coat
The Baleno Livingstone is a modern take on the classic Australian outback Drover's riding mac, often referred to as a 'Duster' coat, but with a savvy update for today’s needs. Baleno has blended traditional style with cutting-edge waterproof fabrics and innovative technologies, which is perfect for anyone having to battle with the elements.
It's easily one of our bestselling mens long waterproof coats every year, and, for me, it was a well-chosen upgrade on a previous raincoat in my wardrobe.
I admit I was a bit hesitant at first, thinking I might look like I’ve stepped out of a period drama, but it turns out, this coat is both practical and stylish. It comes in two smart colours—Camel and Earth Brown—that seamlessly fit into the countryside landscape without standing out too much.
The Livingstone coat has been thoughtfully designed with an active fit that’s flattering and not at all bulky, which is a breath of fresh air compared to some of the other options out there. An instant highlight is easily its impressive waterproof and breathable fabrics, plus it is part of the Baleno Interchangeable Lining System, which lets me zip in a Harvey Gilet or Henry fleece jacket as an extra layer.

When Would You Wear this Long Waterproof Coat?
For me, I wear the Livingstone every day for my dog walks around the field, come rain or shine. It's particularly useful for drizzly days when you can't quite escape the wet weather!
Alongside dog walking, it is incredibly versatile and can handle a variety of activities, such as:
- Horse Riding: Its length and waterproofing make it the ideal riding coat for those wet and wild days at the stables.
- Everyday Wear: It dresses down nicely, making it a practical choice for things like the school run or weekend sports.
While it’s perfect for these daily and country activities, if you’re on the move a lot or need something for long hikes, you might find the longer length a bit cumbersome. For those occasions, something with more leg freedom might be a better fit.
Key Features
When I first came across the coat, I was surprised at just how many features it had. Knowing Baleno's reputation, I knew that each would have been in place for a reason. Luckily, I was proved right and I have found everything to be up to scratch here.
Here’s a rundown of what you get:
- Material Composition: 85% polyester, 15% polyamide fabric with a waterproof PU laminate backing
- Waterproof - the fabric resists water ingress when tested up 8,000 mm during Baleno's hydrostatic pressure test where a column of water is placed against the fabric
- Breathable - allows body vapour to pass through fabric so wearer remains comfortable. Tested result of 3,000 g/m²
- Taped seams
- Two-way main zip with studded storm cover
- Fully adjustable detachable hood with stud fastening
- Vented tail with long gusset
- Moleskin lined collar
- Faux suede trims to cuffs, pockets, storm placket, piping detail etc
- Underarm eyelets to aid fabric breathability
- Adjustable cuffs
- One internal mesh pocket, one zip fastened Napoleon pocket within central zip storm cover, two hip pockets with covers
- Detachable pommel flap covers and protects crotch when seated on a saddle

Pros and Cons
When you’ve had a waterproof coat for a few years like I have with the Baleno Livingstone, you get to know it pretty well—both its strengths and its quirks.
Although I am singing its praises, I want to be upfront about its limitations. No product is perfect, and I’ve put this coat through its paces in all kinds of weather. So, let's take a look at its positives and negatives.
Pros:
- Great Fit: One of the biggest wins with this mens raincoat is the fit. It’s comfortable without being bulky, giving you a nice, tailored look rather than the boxy shape of lesser coats.
- Low Maintenance: It doesn’t hold onto smells like some wax jackets do, and a simple brush or sponge gets rid of mud. Plus, it’s machine washable, which is a real bonus.
- Full Coverage: I particularly like the fact that it reaches down below the tops of my wellingtons and when studded up forms a waterproof cover from head to toe. With a shorter waterproof jacket if it rains your thighs get wet, unless you've thought ahead and put on your waterproof trousers too.
- Solid Zip: The two-way zip is sturdy and easy to handle. No fiddly bits here—just a well-made feature that works as it should.
- Sleek Design: The absence of a shoulder cape is a solid attribute for me. It keeps the design straightforward and avoids the extra fuss that can come with other bush coats.
- Weather Protection: It’s got everything you need—waterproof, breathable, and windproof. Ideal for the British weather!
- Easy Layering: You can zip in the Harvey gilet or Henry fleece jacket, or you can just put on your favourite gilet or fleece underneath. So, even though it's not padded, you still get the extra warmth when you need it on those colder winter days.
Cons:
- Hood Design: The adjustable hood is roomy and covers my head, but could use a peak to keep rain out better. On particularly stormy days, I found adding a leather peak baseball cap underneath helps a lot.
- Leg Straps: The leg straps can be a bit of a nuisance. If left loose, the Velcro can snag on your trousers, so I ended up taping them down.
Is It the Right Mens Long Waterproof Coat for You?
So, is the Baleno Livingstone worth adding to your collection? Based on my experience, it’s definitely a standout option for everyday use, especially if you’re in charge of dog walking like I am.
It has all the features you need to make a fully weather-proof, smart coat that meets modern standards in terms of both style and ability. The coat’s long length, in particular, has been a game-changer for me, providing excellent coverage and keeping me dry during those rainy strolls.
Of course, it's worth noting that while this waterproof coat excels in many areas, it might not be the perfect fit for everyone - for example, if you need something for long-distance hikes or around the farm.
Overall, it’s on the pricier side, but if you’re willing to invest in quality, it’s worth it. I was lucky enough to receive mine as a Christmas present, so it might be worth dropping hints to Santa Claus!
Alternative Waterproof Long Coats
As I mentioned earlier on, I tried a cheaper alternative before I was treated to the Livingstone. That was the Champion Highgrove, and I have to say that it is a decent budget option.
However, the Livingstone, with its thick yet flexible durable fabric, does offer a significant upgrade. It is strong, tear-resistant, and shows minimal wear and tear—qualities that justify its higher price. The leather-look trim on the cuffs has worn smooth over time, but that's the only visible sign of ageing.
We also have a wide range of other mens long waterproof coats which you may wish to take a look at. I've suggested a few popular choices below:
- Jack Murphy Emmet Waterproof Long Coat
- Baleno Newbury Waterproof Long Coat
- Jack Murphy Lambourne Mens Long Bush Coat
Each of these alternatives brings something different to the table, so it’s worth considering what features matter most to you.
Summary
And so, we've reached the end of our review! This was my take on the Baleno Livingstone, and I hope you enjoyed reading it.
If you’re in the market for a new raincoat, I would highly recommend giving this one a serious look. It’s a bit of an investment, but its practical weather protection and classic country style make it worth every penny.
It’s been my trusty choice through countless dog walks and outdoor activities, and I’ve been consistently impressed with its performance. You can pick up one for yourself here, or give us a call if you'd prefer.
