We’ve all attempted to open gates with numb fingers, or climb over a stile only to land in an ankle-deep puddle, with your socks now soaked and your hands too cold to untie your laces; the cold and wet can be a day-ruiner for sure.
I’ve spent many mornings on the farm where winter weather has made simple tasks much harder than they needed to be, and while winter in the countryside does bring with it its challenges, I believe that with the right gear, frozen fingers or soggy socks shouldn’t be one of them.
Being prepared is key, and good gloves and socks aren’t just optional extras and stocking fillers, but essentials worth investing in for cold months in the countryside. So, in this quick guide, I’ll be introducing you to a top new Hollands arrival ready for winter 2025- Sealskinz.
We’ll be finding out who they are, along with how to choose the right Sealskinz gloves and socks for your needs, from gloves designed for dexterity on the peg, to socks built to keep the cold weather at bay and waterproof your wardrobe accessories this winter we’ve got you covered for life in the countryside.
Who Are Sealskinz? Built for British Weather
Born in the UK over 25 years ago, the Sealskinz brand was founded with a single mission in mind: not only to create waterproof accessories, but to craft the finest waterproof accessories in the world.
What makes their approach particularly unique is their use of three-layer waterproof technology. Each piece combines a durable outer layer, a waterproof yet breathable membrane, and a soft inner lining for comfort, creating accessories that are windproof, fully waterproof, and still allow your skin to breathe.
From the shooting peg to the lambing shed, Sealskinz has become a brand trusted by countryside lovers, adventurers and even the military. They have worked in partnership with some of the world’s greatest athletes, including mountaineers, explorers, cyclists, skiers, runners, sailors, horse riders & all forms of mad ultra-event teams.
While we may not be ultra-event athletes ourselves (just the occasional 10k), for us at Hollands, they tick all the boxes: British-made innovation, built for British weather, and accessories that actually make winter life easier.
Sealskinz Gloves: Protection with Dexterity
Something we find our customers worry most about with winter gloves is that they give you warmth, but often at the cost of your dexterity. Tying a dog lead, loading a cartridge, or fixing a gate latch can be impossible wearing what feels like a pair of marshmallows- you know the frustration!
That’s where Sealskinz gloves have the upper hand (quite literally), and here are some of our picks:
Hollands Go-to Glove picks:
- Sealskinz Acle Water Repellent Nanosealz Fleece Gloves
The perfect in-pocket pair for everyday wear, the Acle Water-Repellent fleece gloves are lightweight and sleek, without compromising on performance. Thermal, affordable and technically designed, they even come complete with a handy S-grip for touchscreen compatibility.
- Sealskinz Stanford Waterproof Sporting Gloves
Dexterity? No problem. A modern-day, waterproof shooting glove with three-layer Aquasealz™ technology, a Goatskin suede palm for optimal grip, and a fold-back finger and thumb, the Stanford Waterproof Shooting Gloves mean business for those out in the field.
- Sealskinz Howe Waterproof Multi-Activity Gloves
Premium gloves built for cold, wet weather, the Howe Waterproof Multi-Activity Gloves are extra-durable. They sit at a slightly higher price point, but are packed with performance-driven features, such as three-layer waterproof Aquasealz™ technology, fusion control, and a Merino wool lining for top-tier warmth and waterproof protection.
Sealskinz Socks: Say Goodbye to Soggy Socks
If there’s one essential, but often overlooked accessory in the winter country wardrobe, it's definitely socks. While most people invest in the best quality boots, they often forget about the importance of that underrated extra layer. Sealskinz offer cushioned, breathable comfort against dreaded blisters, cold toes or that swampy foot feel. So even if mud seeps over your boot soles, your feet stay dry, warm and comfortable.
Hollands Sealskinz Sock Picks:
- Sealskinz Scarning Recycled Wool Mid Length Twisted Hiking Socks
A performance-driven sock with a natural feel, the Scarning Recycled Wool Hiking Socks are a warm, lightweight option for everyday wear. The recycled wool and cashmere offer luxurious softness, and with reinforced toe and heel for longevity, these are premium hiking socks designed to last.
- Sealskinz Raynham Waterproof Mid-Length Socks
The original outdoor-built, military-trusted Raynham Sock. A Men’s and Women’s waterproof breathable sock, the Raynham thrives in any environment, featuring an Extra-durable Polycolon exterior with 4-way stretch for an optimal fit, and premium merino wool for comfort, sweat-wicking and odour resistance. It is also Handcrafted in the Sealskinz factory in Norfolk.
- Sealskinz Starston Waterproof Mid-Length Socks
Waterproof yet breathable, the Starston is a cut above in cold environments. The Aquasealz membrane releases internal moisture and keeps out external water, while a merino wool interior is soft and insulating, with natural odour resistance. Built for cold, high-altitude pursuits, snowy countryside days are no match for this military-grade sock.
Caring for Your Sealskinz
Like with most high-quality technical country clothing, maintaining top performance requires the correct care and attention, no matter how small. So, before we go, here are a few top tips on caring for your new Sealskinz accessories:
- Wash at 40°C, and as Sealskinz say; they are best washed and dried inside out.
- To dry, avoid wringing out harshly and low tumble or drip dry.
- Keep away from heat sources such as radiators, as these can damage the internal waterproof membrane.
- Avoid ironing, dry cleaning or bleaching.
- Good news, though, as no waterproofing treatment is needed. The membrane is a permanent, waterproof barrier, so there is no need to treat or reproof it in order to maintain or restore waterproofing.
- When it comes to storage, as best practice, store dry and flat between wears.
- Care instructions can also be found inside your socks (if a waterproof model) -- just roll over the cuff!
Winter Made Easy With Sealskinz
When it comes to winter, it’s important to remember that the smaller extras are just as crucial as big coats and sturdy boots, and can make all the difference!
Here at Hollands, we only bring in new brands when we know they’ll serve our customers well, stocking gear tested in real conditions. We ask one question first: does it stand up to the British countryside? And with their mission living up to the quality of their tried-and-tested gloves and socks, we can say that Sealskinz definitely does.
