What is a Waterproof Fleece?

A waterproof fleece takes the best key features of a traditional normal fleece - soft, comfortable warmth - and combines them with the added benefit of waterproof protection. So if it rains (and in the countryside, it likely will!) you don't have to rush indoors or risk getting soaked through.

And the dual function of warmth and waterproofing means you don’t have to have an outer garment as an extra layer, which can sometimes feel bulky and restrictive.

How Waterproof are Waterproof Fleeces?

One of the most common questions we get is about the level of waterproofing you can expect from these fleeces. Not all waterproofing is created equal, and knowing what your fleece can handle is key to making the right choice.

Many of the fleeces we stock are designed to withstand light to moderate rain. This means they’re ideal for misty mornings, light showers, and the occasional downpour. However, if you’re heading out in heavy, sustained rain, you might still prefer to layer with a more robust waterproof jacket.

Choosing the Right Size and Fit for Your Fleece

A fleece jacket is one of those comfort items in most people's wardrobes. It's often the item you'll throw on over your tattersall shirt for extra warmth around the farm or just your everyday t-shirt when you're out and about in the village. It might also be your mid - layer under a wax jacket or shooting jacket.

So having it fit well is important.

It's worth getting some up-to-date measurements for yourself (chest, waist, and hips) and comparing these to the product size guides. Think about how tight or loose you like your fleece clothing to feel too. Sometimes, you may prefer a slightly baggier fit for a full-zip fleece in particular, so you can easily layer it over your shirts.

Caring for Your Waterproof Fleece

Machine washable is one of those phrases everyone wants to hear when it comes to their fleeces, and those in our wide range deliver the good news! Always check the care label, however, just to check if there are any specific instructions.

In general, it's suggested to use a cold wash and avoid tumble drying unless the manufacturer specifically recommends it, as too much heat can also damage the waterproofing.

If your fleece starts to lose some of its water resistance after repeated washes, don’t worry - this is completely normal. You can easily revive its waterproofing with a spray-on or wash-in waterproofing treatment.
